Training and Education Resources

The following list represents online sources of information that may be of use to technical communicators and people interested in becoming technical communicators. Some of the sites represented provide online tutorials or other educational material, others provide reference material, while others are directed toward technical communication educators.

The Socitey for Technical Communication, the Southern Arizona chapter of the STC, and its members provide this list as a service. We are not affiliated with any of the sites listed, unless they are specifically identified as STC sites, and we cannot verify that any or all of the information provided on these sites is correct and accurate.

A description is provided for each link listed. Text in quotation marks indicates that the description used is that of the site author. For example, if a site contained descriptive text, such as "The Technical Writer's Online Resource," and we used that phrase in our description, the phrase will be shown in quotation marks.

Winwriters: Resource Page
http://www.winwriters.com/resource.htm - The Winwriters resource page offers links to many useful sites.

Lynda.com
www.lynda.com - Lynda.com is the professional site of Lynda Weinman, an author, designer, animator and teacher. She has written several books on graphics, graphic design, and Web publishing. Her web site includes tips, downloads, links and Web-safe color charts by hue or value, a subscription-based online movie library, and a newsletter. You can also get information about training CDs and classes offered by Lynda Weinman and her associates.

Digitext
www.digitext.co.uk - "Digitext is Europe's leading provider of online Help services. It provides services and skills to help any organisation design and distribute online information for users of IT systems." Digitext offers brief online articles on new help technologies and trends in online help, and their web site advertises that they are in the process of expanding their online offerings. You can get information about the Online Help Conference - Europe 2002, sponsored by Digitext, and about training sessions offered by Digitext.

"Welcome to Tools, Templates, & Training"
http://edwebiii.sdsu.edu/T3/index.html - "The T3 Institute is designed to provide you with some 'best practices' for online teaching and learning, along with some tools and templates to implement those strategies." The material presented at this site is a portion of an online workshop for the CSU Virtual University faculty, designed to help them design and implement online courses.

The Studio of Saul Carliner
http://saulcarliner.home.att.net/ - "Saul Carliner is an internationally known expert on e-learning, information design, and technical communication….Saul is also an assistant professor of information design at Bentley College in Waltham, Massachusetts. He teaches courses on content development, visual communication, performance support and agent-based systems, and e-learning. His research focuses on the models, processes, and techniques of information design, and the metrics used to assess content design and development." Saul Carliner's website provides a wealth of information about technical communication and content development, with several online articles. You can also get information seminars and workshops Saul Carliner offers, about his academic classes, and about his consulting services.

STC - Practical Communication Committee
http://www.stcregion.org/pcc/index.html - "As part of STC's Academic and Research programs, the Practical Communication Committee was created to link STC with high school educators." Mission Statement: "Explore, develop, and coordinate programs with schools, agencies, and STC chapters to help high school teachers develop and use functional, practical writing curricula."

STC - Academic Programs
http://www.stc.org/academic.html - The Academic Programs page on STC's web site offers information about and links to the STC's student competitions, the honorary fraternities Alpha Sigma (AS) and Sigma Tau Chi (STX), and the STC's Academic Programs Database, which provides a worldwide list of academic programs related to technical communication.

Writer's Resource Center
http://poewar.com/ - The Writer's Resource Center is a general purpose site offering articles and links of use to all writers, including technical writers. The article topics include the business of being a writer, fiction, and non-fiction.

About.com
http://about.com/ - About.com provides information on specific subjects which include computer software and hardware. They also have information on more general topics, such as freelance writing. Articles highlighted on their Freelance Writing page on May 9, 2002 put Technical Writing in the spotlight and included an overview of the field, "What's Your Purpose?", and "Cyberspace, Copyrights and Carelessness."
